Thursday, October 24 Table and Chairs presents: Trip or Treat at Columbia City TheaterSeattle, Washington   Founded in 2011, Table & Chairs is an independent record label based in Seattle, Washington, collectively run by a dedicated group of active musicians and artists. In addition to promoting and releasing music, they produce concerts and organize educational outreach programs. Their purpose is to represent and unite artists and listeners who actively contribute to a forward-thinking community, wholly devoted to the advancement of New Music.

Table and Chairs is very excited to present an exciting Halloween-inspired show, which they are calling Apparitions. It will take place at Seattle’s historic Columbia City Theater  next Thursday.

Opening the show will be the brand new duo comprised of alto saxophonist Jacob Zimmerman and pianist Gus Carns. Performing all original music, the duo features a unique brand of rhythmically complex improvisations. Their music is restless yet relaxed; precise yet spacious; with chaotic musical structures navigated in a flowing, intuitive way.

Following will be the newest addition to the T&C family: Burn List, a new collaboration featuring trumpeter Cuong Vu, tenor saxophonist Greg Sinibaldi, keyboardist Aaron Otheim, and drummer Chris Icasiano. This performance will be a little sneak preview for their debut album, which will be released by T&C in the Winter of early 2014. Be on the lookout!

This fall concert will be especially fun because Table and Chairs is presenting a wonderful new Portland-based noise group Pinkish, which features Andrew Jones (Upright Bass), Ryan A. Miller (Electric Guitar, Electric 12-string Guitar), Kyle Shipp (Electric Guitar) and Grant Pierce (Drum set). Portland is pretty wonderful and has some amazing musicians, so T&C decided it would be a great opportunity to collaborate with Portland’s Creative Music Guild and have them send a band up here to throw down!

Finally, King Tears Bat Trip. Yeah. Did we mention that Ted Poor will be a special guest? Yeah.

Thursday, October 3 I Kultura-A Night of Celebrating Romani Gypsy Music and CultureSeattle, Washington  Lache Cercel and his Roma Swing Ensemble represent the latest chapter in an important movement in Canadian World Music – elite musicians from around the world who settle in Canada and create music that incorporates their own traditions with influences they find surrounding them here. Before leaving his homeland, Lache Cercel was one of Romania’s premier musicians. Cercel’s music is firmly rooted in Roma tradition, styled with Doina Klezmer, Middle Eastern and European sounds, and held together with jazz improvisation. He calls his fusion Roma Jazz or Roma Swing. In the tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephen Grappelli, Cercel lays classical and improvisational jazz alongside traditional renderings, which makes for a phenomenal sound.  At this special performance, Lache Cercel and the Roma Swing Ensemble will perform with the Seattle Flamenco Project featuring: Savannah Fuentes and Jed Miley.

Artist Ticket Picks! The Inaugural Edition.

CafeRacer1*304Welcome to our newest weekly blog feature on the Brown Paper Tickets Blog: Artist Ticket Picks!

As many of you already know, a year ago, a tragedy struck the artistic community here in Seattle a little over a year ago. While there’s no need to go into the specifics (you can read more about the crime here), two of the victims were good friends and artistic peers to many of us here at the company and we felt compelled to activate a program that we’d been discussing for some time: the Artist Tickets.

The idea was to ask well-known graphic artists to donate a work of art that would adorn a special, limited-edition ticket. If a producer opted in to the program, then they would give their ticket buyers the options to receive a cool, collectable ticket by just paying a quarter extra on their, already low, ticket fee. We would then donate all proceeds from the sales of these tickets to a charity of our choosing.

When we began to get news on how the families of the victims of the Cafe Racer shootings were struggling, we decided to put the Artist Ticket program into place in an effort to raise money for those that lost so much. Two nationally known artists, Ellen Forney and Jim Woodring, just happened to be regulars at Cafe Racer and generously donated their artwork for the inaugural batch of tickets and, just like that, the Artist Ticket program was born.

We’ve now passed the year anniversary of that horrible day and are proud to say that we’ve raised over $7,000 for the families of the victims. This is still a long way off from our goal of $25,000 but we feel it’s a very admirable start.

Mid-Week Beat: Happy Birthday Macklemore!

macklemore-366287So, most of you probably know that us Seattlites are pretty proud of our hometown, hip-hop hero Macklemore and his recent success. Well, today, we have another reason to celebrate Mr. Ben Haggerty (Macklemore’s real name), it’s his 30th birthday today! I have a feeling that the 30s are going to be pretty kind to Macklemore. He’s certainly accomplished a lot for such a young man.

We’re proud of Macklemore’s DIY roots and love to see artists take their careers into their own hands as opposed to letting them be dictated by industry “experts” who are only interested in the bottom line. So, in honor of Macklemore and DIY hip hop everywhere, we decided to feature three independent hip-hop artists that are using Brown Paper Tickets for some of their upcoming shows and tours.

One, Oakland’s Del tha Funky Homosapien, is a bonafide legend in the independent hip-hop scene but let’s hope the other two can achieve the level of success Macklemore has, while still staying true to their DIY roots. Either way, it’s great to have hip-hop artists like these out there, challenging the mainstream and pushing the musical boundaries of the genre.

These days you can very easily find all sorts of flavored liquors and mixers to create your own festive cocktails. This week I want to share three classic recipes for you to try out at your holiday party: Hot buttered Rum, Egg Nog, and Minty Hot Chocolate. The recipes I am sharing with you this week are mostly for adults, but can easily be made with out liquor for those of us that don’t drink.

SAVE THE INDEPENDENT MOVIE HOUSE!

Does it seem that lately American culture is slowly becoming more and more homogenized, insular and isolated? Advancements in technology have made it so we can experience almost any form of entertainment from the safety of our homes. We can buy the latest Black Keys CD or see the latest Harry Potter movie while sitting around in our underwear. We can watch Leonard Cohen live in London on hi-def Blue Ray with surround sound without having to cram ourselves into a crowded arena amongst other (gasp!) humans and we can order our dinner online and have it delivered in 30 minutes. Dinner and a show? Done! All without leaving the house.
