Tuesday Tease: Portland’s All That Glitters Burlesque Academy

DSC_3544-e1384568325700Exciting news! Portland, Oregon’s getting a brand new burlesque school!

I recently got an e-mail from Holly Dai, who used to be with the Frim Fram Foxies, (who we did a feature on back in July of 2012) among other troupes, and she told me about her exciting new venture: the All That Glitters Burlesque Academy. Her partner in this new venture is Tana the Tattooed Lady, who is a veteran of the Seattle burlesque scene and a former member of one of the pioneering Northwest burlesque troupes, the Atomic Bombshells.

It’s always an exciting time when you see burlesque schools start to pop up in towns like Portland because it’s a sign that the scene is growing and certainly, will continue to grow as students leave to produce their own shows and form their own troupes. I’ve certainly seen the Portland burlesque community grow significantly over the last three years. While the scene still remains relatively small, I think in a couple years, Portland’s burlesque scene will rival that of Seattle or San Francisco. I also have a feeling that All That Glitters will be, in no small part, responsible for that growth.

Holly also teased (how appropriate!) some exciting news. Oregon may be getting its very first burlesque festival! They aren’t saying much at this point but we’ll be waiting with bated breath to hear more news on this exciting development.

We sure appreciate Holly and Tana taking time out of their busy lives to chat with us about All That Glitters, their influences, their history, the Portland scene and more. They even offer a little advice to those of you out there that’d like to start your own burlesque academy.

So, without further ado, I give you Holly Dai and Tana the Tatooed Lady!

Tuesday Tease: Our Guide to Burlycon 2013!

WEB-burlycon2013That’s right! Get excited! Burlycon, the only “community-oriented professional growth and educational convention for Burlesque performers, fans, and aficionados” is returning to Seattle’s Doubletree Inn this Thursday, November 7 to Sunday, November 10.

Burlycon is not your standard burlesque convention in that it has no public showcases or burlesque shows. Burlycon is produced by the burlesque community, for the burlesque community. It’s where you go to get your routines peer-reviewed by some of the top talents in the burlesque world, to learn some new moves that’ll spice up your act or tips on how to beef up your stage costumes. It’s also where you go to learn how to properly manage your finances as a burlesque performer, how to use online marketing to promote your shows and tips on how to get booked.

I’ll also be in the house, teaching a class on Saturday, November 9 at 5:15pm in Cascade 13 on how to most effectively ticket your burlesque event using Brown Paper Tickets or similar ticketing platforms. Also, Brown Paper Tickets will be hosting a delicious Mediterranean dinner courtesy of Mr. Gyros on Friday, November 8 from 6pm to 8pm in the Hospitality Suite, as well as handing out some neato gift bags. If you’re headed to Burlycon this year, I hope you’ll attend either of these events and come up and say hi. I love meeting burly friends from around the country and Burlycon often feels like one big family reunion!

There’s also tons to do besides learn. Thursday night will be the Birds of a Feather Caucuses in Cascade 10-13. This is your chance to mingle, network, and chat with others in your community whoburlycon2009_donspiro_02 share common backgrounds. Attendees are encouraged to attend the caucuses you identify with based on your region, your relationship status (single, married, parents or poly), your community (performers of size, LGBTQI, performers with disabilities or performers of color) or you hobbies. The caucuses will be followed by a meet and greet social in the Hospitality Suite so you can start connecting with new and old friends and get your weekend started out right!

Tuesday Tease: Spring Has Sprung!

spring-pin-upYes, spring has finally sprung. The flowers are starting to bloom and the sun is finally starting to peek its head out of the clouds, promising warmer days to come…at least for those of us up here in the northern part of the country. But, no matter where you’re at, spring is the time when the birds and the bees are frolicking and folks start wearing a little less clothing. Which means it’s a perfect time for burlesque!

We have some great upcoming shows that play up the spring theme featuring faeries, songbirds, flowers and Rosé wine. There’s even a yard sale in Allston hosted by the Boston Babydolls! The majority of these events are taking place in Washington state because after months of rain and clouds, we get pretty excited when we start to see the sunshine and can look forward to a gorgeous Pacific Northwest summer!

Really though, it doesn’t matter where you’re at, spring is one sexy time of year. Enjoy!
