Tuesday Tease: This Week in Burlesque

0

283664-250I mentioned in an earlier post that October seems to be a big month for burlesque shows. I credit this to there being so many fun themes that you can play with: horror movies, sci fi, fantasy, etc. I was trying desperately to find a “theme” for this blog post but the events this week are so good, I think they’re a theme in themselves. How can you go wrong with Addams Family burlesque, nerdlesque, David Cronenburg burlesque, a Halloween-themed Dr. Sketchy’s, a burlesque festival in Floria and tons of other great events? Really, pretty much all the burlesque events on our site for this week are certain to entertain and titillate.

Enough from me. Check out these great events and get excited. Halloween is just a mere two weeks away!

Tuesday Tease: The Burly Beat!

0

roxy-orghestra-roxy-theater-10_2be5f4f92fMusic and burlesque are natural bedfellows. I mean, it’s pretty hard to shimmy without some sort of a backbeat right? The neo-burlesque scene has made a concerted effort to take burlesque sounds away from the bump & grind/jazz/r&b/rockabilly soundtrack we tend to associate with classic burlesque, incorporating almost every genre of music imaginable. Now you can see a burlesque show that incorporates hip hop, classic rock, electronica, hell, I’ve even seen burlesque dancers perform to classical music! The sky’s the limit when it comes to a performers chosen soundtrack.

While music is omnipresent at burlesque shows, it’s not always the focus. So, this week, I’ve decided to feature burlesque events where the music is the star. It could be a tribute to a well-known artist or a show built around an original soundtrack, we got it all and these events span many musical genres: classic burlesque striptease tunes, the music of Meat Loaf, the cartoon music of the Animaniacs, hip hop and Celtic punk among others.

Doesn’t matter if you’re on the West Coast, East Coast, the sultry South or the UK, the burly beat goes on. Enjoy!

Thursday, August 15

Hot Patooties: A Burlesque Tribute to Meat Loaf!Brooklyn, New York   Whatever happened to Saturday night? In 1975, with these immortal words, Meat Loaf (née Marvin Lee Aday) made like a bat out of Hell, bursting out of Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s freezer and into the American consciousness. In the almost 4 decades since he has not only sold more than 80 million albums worldwide – he has also collaborated with Cher, been called Robert Paulson, had Michael Bay direct 3 of his music videos, and, in the ultimate sign of a life of sex, drugs and rock & roll, been the subject of both a Behind the Music AND a VH1 biopic. In honor of this, some of New York’s finest burlesque and variety performers have come together to celebrate the man whose voice is synonymous with both losing your virginity and losing the person you lost your virginity to. Victoria Privates and Creamed Stu are thrilled to present Hot Patooties: A Burlesque Tribute to Meat Loaf! Starring Jo Boobs, Darlinda Just Darlinda, Evelyn Vinyl, Apathy Angel, Victoria Privates, Creamed Stu, Scary Ben, Loose Wayne, and Dick Jones. MC’d by the golden throat of burlesque, Broadway Brassy! Stage kitten and go-go by Gemini Blitz.

Tuesday Tease: This Week in Burlesque!

0

211011-250We usually try to find a fun theme for the Tuesday Tease, whether it be a burlesque legend’s birthday, an interview with an up-and-coming troupe, a burlesque sub-genre, whatever. This week however, while looking over our list of upcoming events, I was impressed by the sheer quality of events happening this week.

Tuesday Tease: Slow Burn Burlesque from New Orleans

0

1191-250 Mardi Gras is fast approaching! Though the official “Fat Tuesday” is February 12, parades start taking the Big Easy’s streets this coming Saturday, January 19. Therefore, in honor of the great city of New Orleans, this week on the Tuesday Tease, we are interviewing Ben Wisdom, co-producer of New Orleans-based burlesque troupe Slow Burn Burlesque.

New Orleans has a long history of burlesque, with Bourbon Street’s heyday spanning the mid-40s to the mid-60s. Even back then, New Orleans performers pushed the envelope of burlesque performance, with many dancers introducing props like giant champagne glasses and oyster shells. Grandiose clubs like the 500 Club and Stormy’s Casino Royale were decked out with luxurious décor, raised stages and theatrical lighting, bringing a higher production value to the art of burlesque, and all shows were, of course, set to a hot jazz soundtrack, the music that New Orleans birthed. In fact, legendary New Orleans saxophonist Sam Butera got his start in Bourbon Street burlesque clubs and Louis Prima’s brother Leon owned the 500 Club for many years.

While Bourbon Street has definitely changed, the burlesque flame is still alive and well in the Big Easy thanks to folks like Slow Burn Burlesque, The Dirty Dime Peepshow, The Storyville Starlets, Fleur de Tease, Freaksheaux To Geaux, Bustout Burlesque and the internationally recognized New Orleans Burlesque Festival. Plus, troupes like Slow Burn, while being a decidedly “neo-burlesque” troupe, pay tribute to New Orleans’ burlesque history by featuring live music and by re-visiting classic burlesque routines, albeit with a modern flair.

Ben Wisdom was kind enough to take some time out from his busy schedule to talk about Slow Burn, the New Orleans burlesque scene, their upcoming show “The Big Sleazy” (Friday, January 25 at the Howlin’ Wolf. Tickets available right over here) and to offer some advice to up-and-coming burlesque performers and emcees.

So, with out further ado, Mr. Ben Wisdom: (more…)

Tuesday Tease: Do the Santa Shimmy!

0

Thanksgiving has passed and the holiday season has begun. Christmas music is filling the streets, shoppers are filing the stores and holiday shows are filling seats all over the country.

If you’re like me, you could take or leave the majority of schmaltzy holiday-themed events. Don’t get me wrong, I love the holidays and spending time with my loved ones but I can take or leave the pre-packaged happiness that’s shoved down our throats this time of year.  I prefer my eggnog spiked with a healthy dose of holiday “spirit” (if you know what I mean) and I’m much more likely to watch “Bad Santa” than sit through “It’s A Wonderful Life.” “The Nutcracker” and “A Christmas Carol” are great but I prefer holiday shows that take the fluff out of “the most wonderful time of the year.”

Luckily for cads like myself, the burlesque scene comes alive this time of year with holiday-themed events that hold the schmaltz and double up on the shimmy and shake. We all know that glitter is better than tinsel and, truth is, I’m much more likely to sit through “A Christmas Carol” if there’s a naked girl reading it and “The Nutcracker” sounds like so much more fun with clowns, circus acts and blow-up dolls.

So, for all my fellow humbugs, I’ve put together the first list of upcoming holiday events for the “adult” set. Whether you’re in Seattle, New Orleans or Anchorage, we got a show for you, complete with adult beverages and titillating temptresses. Baby, it’s cold outside and I can’t think of a better way to heat things up! Enjoy. (more…)

Tuesday Tease: Boolesque! Part 1

0

I’ve often thought that Halloween and burlesque are a great fit. Costumes, drinks, night-life, candy* and naughty fun are big parts of both. And it looks like I’m not the only one who sees the connection. When I sat down to research Halloween burlesque I knew that I would find some good shows but what I didn’t know is how many shows I would find! There are so many shows out there and they are appearing so quickly that I am having trouble keeping this list up to date. This is why I decided to break the list up into two posts.

I also noticed that Brown Paper Tickets’ home-base of Seattle, Washington seems to be the place to be if you want to see Halloween-themed burlesque shows. And while I’m delighted that my home town is at the top of the list, I would love to see the rest of the country step up with more “boolesque” and “gorelesque.” There is a lot out there but there could be more!

Here’s my first list of upcoming “boolesque” events. Stay tuned for a whole bunch more.

* I really want to encourage more performers to throw candy at the audience.

Burlesque for the Holidays!

0

Baby, it’s cold outside. And what better way to get your blood pumping on these chilly winter nights than to take in a little burlesque? Burlesque troupes across the country are putting on holiday-themed events for those of you that can’t be bothered with anything “family friendly” and we’re proud to ticket some of the best that burlesque has to offer. Whether you’re in the mood for a sexy spin on The Nutcracker or want a little bump and grind on Christmas Eve or maybe you’re a burlesque dancer looking for a winter burlesque course to improve your chops. Whatever it is, we got you covered (or un-covered in this case).

How about a great gift idea? Take that special someone out for a night of cocktails and cabaret or treat them to a course on tassel twirling. I, personally, can’t think of a better winter warmer.
