Armed with our passports, a stack of tickets and a video camera, Call Center manager Renee and I trekked up to Canada in her VW Bug to deliver a ticket order for a soccer team with an amazing cause.
Part of the Vancouver Street Soccer League, Portland FC is the Portland Hotel Society‘s soccer team, comprised of individuals who are homeless, were recently homeless or are at risk for being homeless. They’re raising money to send some of their teammates to the Homeless World Cup, an annual event where similar teams come together, compete and hang out. We made this short film about our trip up there and spoke to a coach and some team members, some of which were at last year’s Homeless World Cup in Brazil.
We drove the tickets to them because, after a shipping mix-up, we were worried the tickets weren’t going to get to them in time for their huge fundraising party to send teammates to Paris. The event, held at an East Hastings theater, not only featured live, local bands like Boogieman, Scow, Paula and her Dazzling Jazz Piano, The Furniture, Los Furios and the Vancouver Carnival Band (who posted some great photos of their performance outside the fundraiser), but a silent auction, dance performances and four rounds of wrestling. AHA Media has even more photos of the party the bands, performances and attendees plus some familiar faces from our trip.
We are honored to have helped support such an empowering event. Despite our brief border detainment for “using our borders for commercial purposes,” it was totally worth it. Have fun in Paris, everyone!
