At first glance, the Greenwood Space Supply Company just looks like a lowly purveyor of space travel-related goods. But it has a little secret: it’s part of 826 Seattle. All their proceeds go to their programs, which include drop-in after school tutoring, field trips, in-school programs and writing workshops for youth ages six to 18, all free to public school students. They’ve also published 14 anthologies of student writing, giving 264 talented kids a chance to be a published author.

Founded by local author and teacher Teri Hein, 826 Seattle was originally founded as Studio 26. In 2005, Studio 26 was invited to become a chapter of 826 National, an organization co-founded by author, philanthropist and McSweeney’s founder Dave Eggers that has a similar mission: helping youth with their writing.

Since their inception, 826 Seattle has helped over 10,000 students with 2,000 volunteers giving over 40,000 hours. They helped 2,481 students in the 2010-2011 school year alone, all thanks to strong community support.

Want to be a part of 826 Seattle and all the things they do? Well, they’re always looking for donors and volunteers, but here’s another idea. Dance Your Cash Off, Sunday, June 26 at Nectar Lounge, is a five-hour dance marathon to support all these great programs. You can either go as a spectator hang out, get some drinks and vote on the People’s Choice Award or, even better, register as a team. Team members must be 21 or over, and each team member must raise at least $150, but you can donate to yourself then, everyone must dance the full five hours, with one three-minute break per hour. Keeping yourself in motion shouldn’t be too hard with Emerald City Soul Club and DJ? Whatever spinning.

There’s prizes on the line: the “Perpetual Motion” Marathon Prize is based on accumulated style points, determined by the judges, the “Everybody Loves Me” People’s Choice Award is determined by audience vote, the “Team of Heroes” Fundraising Prize is awarded to the team with the highest-donations-per-dancer, and the “Strength in Numbers” Fundraising Prize goes to the dance team with the largest amount of money raised overall.
