Tuesday Tease: Mama Dixie and The Pink Box Burlesque

Burlesque and vaudeville are booming in the South! We recently started selling tickets for an incredible burlesque troupe with a serious vaudevillian streak out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They call themselves The Pink Box Burlesque and they’ve been keeping the South steamy for the last five years.

They’re unique in that they incorporate both men and women in the troupe and mix things up with contortionism, live music, hula-hooping, comedy and even live piercing. They really harken back to the grand old days of carnys, rubes and midways while adding their own decidedly modern and seriously Southern take on it.

Pink Box were also sponsors of the first ever Alabama Burlesque Festival which took place this past weekend. It’s great to see the Southern burly scene thrive and produce unique talent like The Pink Box.

I caught up with Pink Box’s main Madam, Mama Dixie and asked her about her troupe, the Southern burly scene, the rise of boylesque and more! Without further ado, I give you, The Pink Box Burlesque!

Tuesday Tease: Boolesque! Part 1

I’ve often thought that Halloween and burlesque are a great fit. Costumes, drinks, night-life, candy* and naughty fun are big parts of both. And it looks like I’m not the only one who sees the connection. When I sat down to research Halloween burlesque I knew that I would find some good shows but what I didn’t know is how many shows I would find! There are so many shows out there and they are appearing so quickly that I am having trouble keeping this list up to date. This is why I decided to break the list up into two posts.

I also noticed that Brown Paper Tickets’ home-base of Seattle, Washington seems to be the place to be if you want to see Halloween-themed burlesque shows. And while I’m delighted that my home town is at the top of the list, I would love to see the rest of the country step up with more “boolesque” and “gorelesque.” There is a lot out there but there could be more!

Here’s my first list of upcoming “boolesque” events. Stay tuned for a whole bunch more.

* I really want to encourage more performers to throw candy at the audience.

Doing the Time Warp Across the Country – NW Rockypalooza and more!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show came out in 1975 but it has a cult following like no other film. Showing regularly in theaters around the world 37 years after its initial release, it boasts the longest-running theatrical release in film history. It started out as a “midnight movie” (a term used to describe offbeat films that were shown in midnight screenings in major metropolitan areas across the U.S.) and would become the most successful midnight movie ever. This was largely due to the development of audience participation which included throwing rice during the wedding scene, adding vulgar dialogue to the script, shooting water guns and of course getting up and dancing the ever-popular Time Warp.

Rocky Horror fans have become an international sub-culture and this Friday, July 29, Northwestern Rocky Horror enthusiasts will gather in Portland for the 9th annual NW Rockypalooza. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in their best Rocky Horror costumes and enjoy all-star cast performances of the film at the Clinton Street Cabaret, after-show party events at the Watershed, a Bondage Ball and a “casual” mixer party. This years theme is “Dressed to the Nines” and the organizers are calling it “a fancy dress party with a BDSM twist!” Tickets are going fast so be sure to pick yours up here.
