Tonight, Tuesday, December 17, through Thursday, December 19, it’s movie time at Northwest Film Forum on Capitol Hill. Improvement Club is equal parts musical comedy, dance party and mockumentary. Good fun.

Wednesday, December 18, head over to the Richard Hugo House on Capitol Hill for Who Will Speak— A Celebration of Poetry and Readers. Authors Roger Reeves and Natalie Diaz will read from their debut books. This one is presented with Copper Canyon Press.

How about a trip to Vashon? On Thursday, December 19, hit up Open Space for Art and Community for Acrobatic Conundrum: The Way Out. This one features heart stopping acrobatics, aerial, theater and dance wrapped around a story of survival. Worth the trip.

If you’re more concerned about your music career than the holidays, check out Martin Atkins’ workshop Welcome to the Music Business— You’re F*cked on Friday, December 20. Atkins has worked with Public Image Limited, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails, among others, so he knows what he’s talking about. This one is free and it’s at the Brown Paper Tickets office in Fremont.

You know about School of Rock, right? Kids learning to play in rock bands. On Friday, December 20, head over to Fred Wildlife Refuge on Capitol Hill for School of Rock’s Season Preview Show and Holiday Party. Bring your ear plugs. It might get loud.

Saturday, December 21, get your erotic holiday spirit in gear at The Sultry Solstice Cocktail Party at Love City Love on Capitol Hill. That’s song, dance, spoken word performances, skits and visual art. It’s bound to be a hot night.

Spend the evening at a coffeeshop in the U District as Cafe Soulstice presents the band Yesod, on Saturday, December 21. Best described as a blend of world, blues, jazz and ambient music styles, these rich, living soundscapes go great with your favorite caffeinated beverage.

On Sunday, December 22, why not celebrate the winter solstice at Columbia City Theater with The Longest Night: Bellydance for the Solstice. This show features performances by Verbena Belly Dance, Carouselle Tribal Belly Dance and the Blue Lotus Dance Company.

Tuesday Tease: Hollywood Burlesque Festival

This Friday, the inaugural Hollywood Burlesque Festival kicks off in Los Angeles and we are especially excited for this one as it’s produced by longtime Brown Paper Tickets supporter and producer/hostess of Monday Night Tease, LA’s longest running weekly burlesque show, Lili VonSchtupp. Lili is the perfect example of what is possible if you are passionate and devoted to your art form. To host a weekly show that packs ’em in week in and week out is no small feat and burlesque producers could learn a lot from Lili. She’s definitely got the skills to pay the bills!

Lili’s taking her incredible production skills to the next level this weekend as she hosts the first ever burlesque festival in Los Angeles. She’s got four days of shows, classes, tours, movies and parties planned and I’m especially excited because I get to go down there and be a part of all the fun. If you’ve ever wanted to meet me or know more about Brown Paper Tickets, you can look for us in vending where we’ll have a table set up all weekend or come to the Three Clubs on Sunday, December 8 from 6:30pm to 8pm, where we’ll be hosting a meet and greet with anyone that’s curious about us, what we do and how we can help you out with your burlesque show, festival or classes. If you’re going to be in LA this weekend, please find me and say hi.

I got a chance to catch up with Lili and pick her brain about the LA burlesque scene, her personal burlesque history and the festival. She even offers some valuable advice to producers out there that are thinking of starting up their own festival.

Hit up the Royal Room in Columbia City tonight, Tuesday, November 12. You’ll find yourself at Soul Crank, a Benefit for Bike Works featuring performances by Black Stax, Darrius Willrich, Rocky Sandoval and more. Bike Works helps build sustainable communities. Good cause. Great tunes.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 13, at the William H. Gates Hall, Room 133, in Lower Queen Anne, Human Trafficking & Supply Chains explores the various forms of this global problem in the sex, agriculture, textiles and hospitality industries. Policy makers, scholars, advocates and students are welcome to attend this eye opening panel discussion.

Friday, November 15, through the weekend, hit up Founders Theater at Velocity Dance Center on Capitol Hill for Fire & Ice. This unique evening brings together living sculpture, original music and dance choreography by a number of amazing artists.

If you’ve ever wanted to see one of the world’s best celtic harp players, you’re in luck on Friday, November 15. Just head on down to the Greenlake United Methodist Church to hear Patrick Ball perform his show, Celtic Harp and Story. This one is full of wit, enchantment and beautiful music.

Saturday, November 16, pick up a Brown Paper Ticket and head over to Kane Hall at UW for 2013 Green Building Slam. You’ll hear ten fast paced, mind blowing presentations about remarkable green building projects in the greater Seattle area.

Tuesday Tease: The Sugar Frosted Crunchy Flake Friday Evening Cartoon Hour!

Sometimes, the only thing you need to do is read the title of an event to know that you are in for an amazing and unforgettable experience. Such is the case with The Sugar Frosted Crunchy Flake Friday Evening Cartoon Hour! happening next Friday, August 2 at the Rendezvous/Jewelbox Theater in Seattle.

The name alone is enough to give you a Saturday morning sugar rush that will last well into Monday afternoon! Producer, Scarlett O’Hairdye, has put together an amazing show fuelled by love, nostalgia, glitter, cartoons and breakfast cereal that is sure to conjure up fond memories of childhood while simultaneously reminding you that there are some things that are better appreciated as a grown-up.

Scarlett, who has produced burlesque shows in Seattle since 2012, drew inspiration for this production from a “love of the cartoons of [her] childhood” and put together a program of “many amazing acts that referenced those cartoons.”

Scarlett says, “I wanted to bring them all together into one show and share that love with the rest of the world in the sparkliest way possible.”

From the sound of it, she accomplished her goal and then some!

The evening’s entertainment will be hosted by Vanadium Silver and feature performances by the “Wild Child of Seattle Burlesque” Evilyn Sin Claire, Randi Rascal, Bolt Action, Scarlett O’Hairdye herself (“The Nearly Naked Nerd”) and, coming all the way up from Portland, Oregon: Kit Katastrophic. All will be presenting acts that pay tribute to and elaborate on memories and iconic imagery of our childhoods! Be ready to have your recollections of cartoons, TV commercials, breakfast cereal and Thundercats changed forever!

Meet the BPT Team: Rachel Wong Releases Album on iTunes and Spotify

We’d like to introduce our Campaign Leader and Community Wrangler, Rachel Wong.

In case you couldn’t tell from what she’s holding in her hand, in addition to being the voice of Brown Paper Tickets on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube and Foursquare, as well as holding the keys to Brown Paper Tickets’ social media and digital marketing strategy, Rachel’s heart is also on display through her music. Take a listen to her latest single, “Center Stage,” here.

Rachel is a self-taught musician, with a natural ear for music, and a passionate drive for expression that resonates and connects her to her fans. Wong was selected from more than 3,000 artists across the US as a Top-12 finalist in Ford’s “Gimme the Gig II” contest in Los Angeles in August 2012. Influenced by Michael Jackson, John Mayer and Lauryn Hill, Wong’s acoustic, soulful pop sound has been compared to “Sara Bareilles, but on the guitar.”

WhiteShirt Tracks from Rachel’s first album and single, Curtain Fall, can now be heard on radio stations in Canada and the Phillipines. Letters to You, her second album to be released on iTunes and Spotify May 28, is a 10-track musical journey from the pop anthem production of “Center Stage” to the island-flavored “Beach Bum Living.” Album tracks feature her soothing, powerful vocals and catchy songs, accentuated by the sincere warmth of her lyrics. A music video to for “Center Stage” will be released on You Tube shortly after the “Letters to You” album release show in Portland on June 29, and you are invited to attend!

Tuesday Tease: 3 Hidden Gems for Producers and Ticket Buyers

I’d like to take a few moments to pull back the curtain and expose some of the inner workings of Brown Paper Tickets in order to help ticket buyers and event producers meet up more easily. I spend a lot of time reviewing burlesque shows and there are a ton of great overlooked tools on the site that producers and ticket buyers can use to find shows and sell tickets.

After consulting with several producers about what features of Brown Paper Tickets they use most, I have compiled a list of the top 3 “hidden gems” on Brown Paper Tickets’ site that producer’s and customers can use to sell tickets and find shows. This being Tuesday Tease, I am going to be highlighting features used by burlesque producers but everything listed here will apply to almost every kind of event.

Hey Seattle! Come by and say hi next Tuesday!

We have some exciting new things happening here at our local office in Fremont and we wan to invite you to stop by and see what’s going on.

We’re hosting a Meet & Greet at our Tree House offices on Tuesday May 15th from 5 – 7pm. It’s free to attend and all you have to do is RSVP here!

Meet Event Tech, Michelle Sunnyday, from our Client Services department. She will be launching our new One on One Tutorial program and she can answer all your event questions, as well as offer assistance with using Brown Paper Tickets’ account tools.

Also check out our Tree House workshop space. It’s available for use for no fee and can hold up to 50 attendees. Just come talk to us about using the space.

This will also be a great opportunity to network with other producers in the community and to share your tips and ideas on event production. Or talk to some of the other Brown Paper Tickets team members who will be on hand to talk about anything you need, from ticketing to event promotions services.

If you are new to Brown Paper Tickets, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with our system and how you can use it for your own events. If you are a current Brown Paper Tickets user, this is an excellent chance to learn about some of the advanced features you may have missed as well as learn some tips on how to package your events to maximize ticket sales.

GIVEAWAY: Nectar Lounge Brings Earth Day for All Ages to Seattle!

It’s always a treat to work with our neighbors over at Nectar Lounge! The venue/bar is a fantastic spot, committed to sustainability, good times, nightly events, and patio beverages. For this Earth Day weekend, Seattle can have it all, with all-ages activities and music during the day and of-ages party action during the night at the Fremont Earth Day Festival — and all it sets you back is $15 or an old bike. Proceeds benefit the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation.

While the party for grown-ups goes all day and all night, the daytime is geared toward kids and families, opening at 11 a.m. both days this weekend begin with a dance party, going into a special performance each day at noon: Bubbleman (a bubbleman) on Saturday, then the Not-Its (kindie rock!) on Sunday, plus some Earth Day-themed activities to keep them busy.

Later, once you’ve gotten a sitter (or if you don’t have kids and you’re just ready to party), the of-ages happenings start with a chill but fun-loving, diverse lineup of folk, R&B, reggae and more, including songwriter Sarah Christine, acclaimed jazz/funk/world collective Snarky Puppy, and improvisational rocker Nefarious Jones, spread over both Saturday and Sunday nights for a full weekend of eco-minded grooves. Feel the Love This Friday!

Northwest Lovefest began in the same Seattle neighborhood as the Brown Paper Tickets flagship office. It’s a community-based music and arts festival that began in 2010. What originally started as a celebration of the artistic talent residing in this eclectic neighborhood has now expanded its vision and scope to include like-minded talent from throughout the Northwest.

The goal of LoveFest is to provide an affordable alternative to the high-priced, fenced-in music festivals that have become the norm. They have lowered advanced ticket prices this year and with the help of TerraPass, will be neutralizing the carbon waste from their generators. They also donate a portion of each ticket sale to offset 50 miles of carbon per person. Last year they offset 9.3 metric tons of carbon waste from the festival. Through these environmental efforts and by lowering the admission price, LoveFest gets closer to their goal of being all about ‘love for the environment and love for one another.’

This year’s festival will take place on Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1 in Magnuson Park. Preview shows will take place in the months leading up to the festival. These shows will give folks a taste of the incredible musical talent that will be hitting LoveFest stages this summer. The kickoff show will take place at Nectar Lounge, this Friday, February 10 and will feature live performances from Cody Beebe and the Crooks, Perry Acker and Redwood Son. Featured Non-Profit: Girls On The Run

If you’re a runner, you know the powerful effect running can have on a person. Not only is running physically beneficial, it can help you mentally as well. Tired? Having a bad day? Frustrated by something?Need to get out of the house? Work it out with a good jog and you’ll feel better by the end. It’s amazing how a run can give you a new perspective on things. Need an excuse to get out there? How about running to help change lives and benefit communities? 5K events happen almost every weekend and the proceeds go to great community organizations.

This Saturday, December 3^rd, is the New Balance Girls on the Run 5k Community run. Women, men, children, leashed pets and all-terrain strollers are welcome to participate! “Girls on the Run of Puget Sound is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Since 2002, GOTRPS has operated as an after-school prevention program for 3rd through 5th grade girls throughout Puget Sound.”
