Tuesday Tease: Thank You Burlycon!

16890_10151137118003543_345915610_n-300x225This last weekend, Burlycon 2012 hit the Doubletree Hotel in Seattle and Brown Paper Tickets was there to soak up all the glitter-tastic fabulousness.

I led a workshop on Saturday morning discussing ticketing techniques and options available to burlesque producers alongside our Event Tech genius Michelle Sunnyday and my good friend, Seattle-based bellydance/cabaret producer Miss J9 Fierce. There was some great discussion on the different ways producers can approach ticketing and issues folks have had with ticketing. I learned a lot from everyone there and I want to give a special shout-out to Mr. Scratch from the Boston Babydolls who provided a ton of information as a long-time Brown Paper Tickets vet. I was surprised of the turnout we got considering the class was held at 10am on the morning following the aquatic-themed dance party “Under the Deep Blue Sea.” Attendees looked slightly hung over but were there ready to learn. Thanks to everyone that made it out.

On Saturday evening, me and Michelle, along with Sabrina Roach, our Radio/New Media Doer (and former burlesque dancer) and Karen Chappell, our Brand Guardian, hosted the hospitality suite and served up a whole mess of Mediterranean food courtesy of the great Mr. Gyros. Folks were super thankful for getting some “real” food after being subjected to the overpriced hotel food and fast food that was available in the area surrounding the hotel. After a weekend of shimmying, shaking and partying, the tasty treats went over like hot cakes and we kept the food coming until hospitality closed its doors at 11pm.

We also gave away 300 gift bags loaded with glitter from the good folks at Elektra Cosmetics and flower hair clips hand-made by the Brown Paper Tickets staff. Also, congratulations to Iris, the lucky winner of our giveaway drawing for an Ultimate Burlesque Performance Kit from Elektra Cosmetics. That girl is swimming in glitter right now!

I also got the chance to meet producers that I’d been chatting to over e-mail face-to-face, which was great. Had some great conversations with producers and left the hotel that night tired but excited about all the amazing things that are happening within the burlesque world all over the U.S and Canada. Folks certainly got a lot of stuff up their sleeves and I think 2013 is going to be an incredible year for the burlesque community.

The rest of the time, I wandered around, attended a few classes, took part in the massive class photo, checked out vending, met up with some friends and also met a whole bunch of new friends. The big thing that I noticed over the course of the weekend was how incredibly nice and inviting everyone in the burlesque community is. I was never met with an ounce of pretension and the overarching feeling was so positive and empowering that it was impossible not to get swept up in it.

We want to thank the following folks who helped make our presence at our first-ever Burlycon such a wonderful experience: Persephone Illyri, Mercury Troy, Jessica from Elektra Cosmetics, Miss J9 Fierce and Sammy from Mr. Gyros. You all rock and we can’t wait until next year!

Also, if we weren’t able to chat this weekend, I now have a landing page where burlesque folks can get information on what we do for the community, download useful handouts and contact me directly. Head over to: www.brownpapertickets.com/burlesque
