Happy Birthday to the Late Burlesque Legend, Sally Rand!

Arts >

On this day in 1904, burlesque legend Sally Rand was born. Born Helen Harriet Beck, she started out as a silent film actress and was given her stage name by legendary film director and producer, Cecil B. Demille, who was inspired by the Rand-McNally atlas. Following the decline of silent films, she became a dancer and is known for popularizing the fan dance, still a regular routine in burlesque today. Her most famous performance of the dance was at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, where she was arrested four times for indecent exposure while riding a white horse down the streets of Chicago. She would be arrested multiple times throughout her lifetime on similar charges but the charges were always dismissed, since her perceived “nudity” was usually an illusion, with Rand wearing a body suit. Here she is performing the dance that made her famous.

And here’s another burlesque standard that she is credited as having created:  the bubble dance.

In 1936, Sally purchased the Music Box burlesque hall in San Francisco, now known as the Great American Music Hall, and appeared on TV in 1957 on an episode of “To Tell the Truth” where celebrity judges tried to guess the identity of a veiled celebrity. She failed to stump the judges however, and was correctly identified by all four panelists. An indication of her celebrity at the time. Throughout the 60s and 70s, she would appear in nostalgic burlesque revues alongside other legends like Tempest Storm and Blaze Starr. Sally passed away in 1979 but her impact can be seen in today’s neo-burlesque movement of which Brown Paper Tickets is a proud supporter. We have a lot of great burlesque events coming up this week and you can witness Sally Rand’s influence for yourself.

Pay tribute to Sally by checking out any one of these great events. When you see a fan or bubble dance, raise a drink to a pioneering business-woman and performer.

Cheers Sally, we miss you!
