Tuesday Tease: Love and Pasties – Valentine Burlesque

7deac8d54c157ffb60e86be3864f6960I know burlesque has a bit of a rowdy reputation but this week on the Tuesday Tease, we want to focus on the softer side of the shimmy. While certainly burlesque can be raunchy, funny, weird, ironic and topical, it can also be sensual, sensitive and très romantique!

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we are going to focus on some burlesque shows that are sure to provide the perfect appetizer for whatever romantic main course you and your significant other have in mind.

Friday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day

Tuesday Tease: Merry Christmas! Get Ready for Your New Years Tease!

tuesday_tease_new_years_teaseYou’ve survived the apocalypse and it’s finally Christmas! Hope all of you are with loved ones today, enjoying a relaxing day off.

That said, don’t rest on your laurels too long! It’s time to get ready for New Years Eve; the end of the holiday season and the beginning of a new year, full of new possibilities and new adventures! I know it’s been a long year and I know you’re tired but why, with all that’s going down on New Years Eve, would you stay at home watching a glittery ball drop on TV? Why do that when you can go out and watch glittery bras drop, live and in person?

New Years Eve was made for burlesque: glitter, dancing, champagne and celebration all wrapped up (or more accurately unwrapped) into one night of amazement and fun! You need to be out there, champagne glass in hand, saying “goodbye” to 2012 and welcoming 2013!

Whether you want to sit back, sip your drink and watch the festivities or get out on the dance floor and party, we have got an event for you!

Tuesday Tease: Happy Birthday to Burlesque Legend, Satan’s Angel

Every once in a while on the Tuesday Tease, we take time to recognize legends and trailblazers from burlesque history. Today, we really focus on the “blaze” part of trailblazer as we celebrate the 68th birthday of the “Queen of the Fire Tassels,” Satan’s Angel. Satan’s Angel is a living link to the glory days of burlesque and the current neo-burlesque scene. She worked for Gypsy Rose Lee, the original burlesque legend from the 30s and 40s and she continues to inspire up-and-coming burlesque performers. In a 2010 interview with Pin Curl Magazine, she said, “I got balls from Gypsy Rose Lee, the glitz and glamour from Mae West, the class from Lili St. Cyr.”

Satan’s Angel was born Angel Cecelia Helene Walker on September 18, 1944 in San Francisco, California. She began dancing burlesque after winning an amateur strip contest at the North Beach nightclub Moulin Rouge in 1961. Her signature move was setting her tassels on fire, “then extinguishing the flames by means of strenuous mammary rotation.” She performed in San Francisco throughout the 60s at clubs like the Esquire and the Condor Club and even played bass in The Hummingbirds, an all-girl topless cover band that performed at Tipsy’s nightclub in North Beach. From the 1970s and into the 80s, she performed in Vegas, working with legendary burlesque promoters Barry Ashton and Harold Minsky and performing at clubs like the Palomino Club, the Silver Slipper and the Minsky.
