Three Ways Brown Paper Tickets Empowers Communities.

On my blog Spark Change, I’ve been featuring ways you can improve your office and for my final post in this series, I thought I would take this time to examine some things that Brown Paper Tickets does to make a difference in our communities with the hope that other companies will take a piece or two of what we do and create new ways to make their office more giving.

A relatively easy way to make an impact on your community is to make a financial donations to local schools or non-profits. Brown Paper Tickets takes 5% of our quarterly profits and donates that amount to a non-profit. We have also been a part of setting-up micro-loans with Kiva and helping to support people across the world. Look at your profits and give what you can every quarter or every year. Whether it is $10 or $100, the donation will make a difference.

Another great way to make an impact in your community is to give time. Brown Paper Tickets empowers every employee with 40 hours of time-on. This means that each employee could help build houses for a whole week in Africa and get paid as if they were sitting at their desks, working in the office. Employees are also able to break-up their time-on and give one or two hours to their favorite non-profit every week. It is a great way to get people more involved in their communities. This is something easily applied to every company. 40 hours is a lot of time to give as an employer, but even giving 20 hours or even a full working day of 8 hours would make a big difference. It is also a great team building experience when a whole group works on a volunteering project together. Giving employees time to go volunteer takes away the common excuse of not having time to volunteer. Give them time and see what they can do!

In my opinion, one of the most amazing programs Brown Paper Tickets has is our Doer program. Doers, unlike a sales team, are not responsible for business development. Their sole purpose it to go out and help people in their industry, free of charge. They are change makers. Some call it a dream job and I would agree. They are Brown Paper Tickets employees, paid to go out and make a positive difference in our world. How amazing is that?! Now, this one may be a little more challenging to take and apply to your own business, but maybe start by scaling it down and allow some of your employees to take on projects that will make a difference in your community and give them four hours a week to work on that project. There are many variations of a program like this that you could make work for your company.

The more you are able to support your employees’ desire to create positive change, the better world we will have to all share. Go on. Change the world!

Featured Non-Profit: Kiva

As you probably know, Brown Paper Tickets is a ticketing company. We sell tickets all over the world to events and have an unbelievable list (in my opinion) of free services and tools for event producers to put their events together. What you may not be fully aware of is this whole other branch of the company that is very involved in giving back to our communities. This is the realm I am fortunate enough to be immersed in.

One of the most recent additions to our company’s giving came from the Marketing and Communications team. The VP of Marketing and Communications, Kelsye Nelson, was given a budget of $25 a month to take her staff out to lunches or coffee, so instead, in the spirit of Brown Paper Tickets, she and her team decided to vote on one person a month who they feel has been rocking their job and exhibits the essence of Brown Paper Tickets. This month I was honoured with their votes. As the winner of  the grand prize, I get to choose who the money goes to this month at Kiva. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWgAEJE1FuM]

BPT’s Resident Roller Girl Re-Caps the Derby World Cup in Toronto!

Earlier this month our resident roller girl Michelle Sunnyday (aka Sunny Wytha Chansapain – 100% of the Tilted Thunder Rail Birds)  attended the inaugural Derby World Cup. This was a historical event for the derby community with teams from thirteen countries competing for the title of World Champion. We ticketed the event, our Alternative Sports Doer Bob Noxious organized the announcing, and Michelle was there spreading the love to our beloved derby community. Here’s her re-cap:

On December 1st through 3rd, Blood & Thunder Magazine hosted the Roller Derby World Cup. I was lucky enough to be able to attend and serve as an ambassador for Brown Paper Tickets. There were teams from all over the world including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Finland, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, Sweden and USA.

Toronto Roller Derby was the hosting league and the whole event was handled beautifully by the league and their army of volunteers. No one had any idea how well it would be recieved, but attendance exceeded everyone’s expectations with over 2,000 people coming through the doors each day.

New York: How Can I Help You?

I’ve worked for Brown Paper Tickets for about 2 years now, It’s a great place to work and I’m glad to be a part of this team. We ticket so many different types of events, sometimes it’s hard to keep track of all the diversity!

Personally, I’ve helped hundreds of event producers. I’ve provided producers with different perspectives on their businesses; ideas to increase their sales; or sometimes, I’ve just trained them on the tools available to them to increase their success. I’ve helped set up advanced seating options, checked IDs at doors, solved last minute issues and even donated my time to help non-profits list and promote their events. These unique experiences have provided me with a certain, uncommon, skill set which allow me to offer exclusive insights into event production. If I’m not familiar with the type of event you do, I know people who are!  I must say that my co-workers are amazing and inspire me daily with their experience and knowledge. They’re a great resource.

Brown Paper Tickets Employees Jump the Border for Great Cause

Armed with our passports, a stack of tickets and a video camera, Call Center manager Renee and I trekked up to Canada in her VW Bug to deliver a ticket order for a soccer team with an amazing cause.

Part of the Vancouver Street Soccer League, Portland FC is the Portland Hotel Society‘s soccer team, comprised of individuals who are homeless, were recently homeless or are at risk for being homeless. They’re raising money to send some of their teammates to the Homeless World Cup, an annual event where similar teams come together, compete and hang out. We made this short film about our trip up there and spoke to a coach and some team members, some of which were at last year’s Homeless World Cup in Brazil.
