Non-Profits: What Would You Do With Your Own Radio Station?

Today, many of us get our news from neighborhood blogs that report the goings-on in our local communities. These blogs and their popularity are indicative of how hyper-local news is effective in binding and supporting neighborhoods. Another growing source of local information are low-powered FM radio stations, which are non-commercial stations that operate at low power, for low cost, to a hyper-local community area. The popularity of hyper-local engagement has even caught the attention of the FCC, who recently approved the granting of hundreds more low-powered FM radio station licenses to local non-profits.

This provides a unique opportunity for non-profits to use the airwaves as a tool for broadcasting to their local community, and for making a difference in the world.  We encourage any of the non-profits that we work with to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.

Think about it — what would your non-profit be able to accomplish with your own community radio station?

Here’s the story of the community radio station WSLR 96.5 LPFM in Sarasota, Florida. This short documentary gives you a sense of the people, passion and vision that creates community radio and the valuable contributions that stations like WSLR give to their communities. Think how great it would be to have a station like WSLR in your town or city, promoting your causes to your very own hyper-local community! This is your opportunity to make that happen.

Cafe Racer Ticket Program Hopes to Double Fundraising Efforts

On May 30th, tragedy struck the Seattle artistic community. A lone gunman walked into Café Racer, a North Seattle hub of artists and musicians and opened fire, killing four people and injuring one. He then proceeded downtown where he killed another woman while stealing her car. He escaped to West Seattle where he eventually killed himself when tracked down by law enforcement.

The shooting affected many of us here at Brown Paper Tickets, with some of the victims being good friends and fellow artists. It also struck a serious blow to the artistic community who considered the Café Racer to be a safe haven that encouraged diversity and creativity. In the weeks that followed, the Seattle arts community rallied and fundraisers were held almost nightly to help raise money for the lone survivor and the families of those killed. We decided that it was important for us to also take part in the fundraising efforts and so we began to put into action the “Cafe Racer Ticket” program as a way to continue supporting those in need long after the newsworthiness of this tragic event wore off. It has been announced that Café Racer will re-open today and so we felt that this would be a good time to announce that in eight weeks Brown Paper Tickets will unveil the Cafe Racer Ticket program.

A New Way to Say “Thank You” to Veterans Today!

Brown Paper Tickets is proud to announce a partnership with Veteran Tickets Foundation, (also known as “Vet Tix”) to provide a new, easy way for producers and their ticket-buyers to donate tickets to U.S. veterans. This partnership is expected to double the number of tickets being donated to active military, veterans and their families in its first year. It will also enable Vet Tix to begin donations of tickets to U.S. military personnel stationed around the globe.

“The number of tickets donated will easily be as high as 500,000 per year,” said William S. Jordan, Founder and President of Brown Paper Tickets. “Many artists, bands, sports teams, venues and anyone who organizes an event are attracted to Brown Paper Tickets because of our business ethos of giving back; we make a donation to charity with every ticket sold. The same motivations that bring millions to our site may inspire them to join us in saying ‘thank you’ to those who have served our country in the U.S. military.”

“Veteran Tickets Foundation is delighted that Brown Paper Tickets has offered to partner with us by creating a portal for event producers and ticket buyers to make donations to our foundation,” said CEO and Founder of Vet Tix Michael Focareto. ” We’d like to thank Brown Paper Tickets for believing in our mission of giving something to those who have given so much.”

Support Your Local Pride Parade!

Tomorrow is the largest Pride Parade day in the country, with millions expected to attend and support free Pride Parades in San Francisco, New York City, Chicago and Seattle. Outlandish floats and a myriad of exciting sights and sounds will abound at every extravaganza nationwide– but one thing that sets Seattle’s Pride Parade apart from the rest: the ability to support future Pride celebrations and to voluntarily ‘give what you can’ to Seattle Out and Proud through Brown Paper Tickets’ new fee-free donation tool.

The fee-free donation tool is available to all event organizers to collect donations, even from those who cannot attend the event. One hundred percent of the donation proceeds go directly to the event organizer and there is no fee on any portion of the donation.

The Seattle Pride Parade is always free to the public so they can use your donations for improving the parade each year. For more information on Seattle Pride events, including the Pride Parade, visit Seattle Out and Pride’s website. To donate to the organization, or to buy a ticket for their pre-parade breakfast, go to http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/250494.

Happy Pride from all of us here at Brown Paper Tickets and if you’re in Seattle, look for us in the parade on Sunday!

Yucatan Carnitas, Pozole, and Halibut Ceviche from El Centro de la Raza

My name is Patrick Nelson, Brown Paper Tickets’ food and drink specialist. I have been working with a Latino community center in the Seattle area called El Centro de la Raza. My mission is to help them create a program  that brings the community together to learn how to create authentic Latin cuisine.  Chef Vincent Rivera, a long time Seattle chef currently working at Jazz Alley, volunteered his time to demonstrate recipes that fill the soul and the belly with comfort: Carnitas, Ceviche and Pozole.

We cooked and tasted and laughed and chatted and when we were done we ate our delicious creations together in a wonderfully relaxed environment. Everyone had an an ear to ear smile, felt satisfied and full and we received a certificate of completion. Mission accomplished, BPT and El Centro de la Raza. Well done!

Here is my recipe for Yucatan Carnitas, Ceviche and Pozole with Pico de Gallo, which we made at the cooking workshop at El Centro led by Vincent. Enjoy!

How to use Facebook Ads to target your audience

You’re organizing an event that is special and unique. How do you find ticket buyers that are just as passionate about this project as you are? An affordable and easy option for strategic event promotion is Facebook Ads. With over 500 million active users, Facebook is a hub of potential customers cleanly labeled by age, location, and interests. By targeting your audience online, you could fill the house weeks before your event.

Here are a few things you may find useful when setting up your advertising campaign.

Keywords are always key

The listed interests, likes and hobbies of each Facebook user make it easy for you to find people who will be drawn to your event. By associating your ad with industry-specific keywords, you are actively extending your targeted reach. For example, a cabaret variety show might target keywords such as burlesque, circus, or magic. Even better, Facebook allows you to add as many words or “tags” as you want.

Hyperglobal blog, Seattle Globalist Launch Party this Saturday!

The Seattle Globalist is a new “hyperglobal” blog celebrating the Seattle region’s international community and its many connections to the rest of the world. The Globalist offers an unexpected take on international travel, culture, development, and Seattle’s global-local connection.

Seattle has been named a “hyper-diverse city” by the Migration Policy Institute — we have more than 250,000 foreign-born residents, representing every region in the world, and no one country of origin makes up more than a quarter of that group.

The Globalist is a hub for the many people in our region who identify internationally in some way: immigrants, international NGO workers, foodies, travellers — anyone who feels a strong connection to the world outside of our borders. It covers everything from international foods (like Japanese Fusion Hot Dogs and the best Pakistani food on the east side) and bands (like these five international bands coming to Seattle) to Seattleites’ reflections on travelling in the Middle East as an Iranian Jew or in Las Vegas as a Jordanian-American. The Globalist has done stories about St. Patrick’s Day, folk music, and human rights in Burma. The site features a community calendar with international events from cooking classes to film screenings, and writers are drawn from Seattle’s tech, non-profit and journalism communities.

The Globalist is published by the Common Language Project, a nonprofit journalism organization dedicated to covering under-reported international news through multimedia, which is based at the University of Washington.
