Thursday, December 12The Royal Oui, Pretty Broken Things, and Elk and BoarSeattle, Washington

“There’s never been any shortage of music in the Adrienne PierceAri Shine household: Vancouver native Pierce has released four-albums-plus of retro-mini epics known to fans of TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, Veronica Mars and beyond; Shine’s songwriting chops have shone on his solo releases (including last year’s Songs of Solomon) and his work as a composer. The husband-and-wife duo have collaborated before, but not under a band moniker until now, when the sometimes-L.A.-based couple decided to make music (and puns) as the Royal Oui. Their first 7-inch, “When You Lose Your Mind” (b/w “Actual Size”), displays not only their quirky sensibilities but their admirable restraint. And that opening lyric is a keeper.”  – Kevin Bronson Buzzbands.LA

Tuesday Tease: Barbarellesque Blasts Off in Baltimore This Sunday!

289494-250Well, last weekend was Burlycon here in Seattle and over 600 members of the “glitterati” descended upon our fair city for four days of classes, parties and networking. We were honored to host Saturday night’s hospitality suite and got a chance to chat with some old friends and meet some new friends. Unfortunately, we quickly ran out of food given the increased number of attendees but were able to send everyone off with the great earrings that we were giving away. Would love to see some shots of folks sporting the earrings. Feel free to share them on our Facebook page!

Me and fellow BPTer Michelle also taught a class on effectively ticketing a burlesque event and had a great group of fully engaged producers that not only seemed to learn a lot from the class but also brought a lot of great advice themselves. There seemed to be more of a focus on producers this year at Burlycon, which is great, as these are the folks that are going to bring the art form to new audiences through effective marketing and shows that push boundaries and expand the definition of what burlesque is.

All in all, it was a great weekend. There seemed to be a larger contingent of burlesque performers and producers from outside the Pacific Northwest than last year and one such performer/producer was Kay Sera from Baltimore-based Compound Productions 50/50.

They are producing a tribute to Barbarella, the 1968 sexy, sci-fi Jane Fonda romp, with Barbarellesque: An Ecdysiast Theatrical Experience this Sunday, November 17 at The Windup Space in Baltimore. We highly recommend that you check it out. The producers at Compound Productions 50/50 promise that this is “More than a themed show and beyond nerdlesque, this fully scripted performance follows the film’s delightfully cheesy plot and dialogue and adds even more sexy silliness with striptease and song!”

Check out the original trailer and you can already see that this movie was bound to get the burlesque treatment eventually. I’m just shocked that it hasn’t happened until now.

Tuesday Tease: Our Guide to Burlycon 2013!

WEB-burlycon2013That’s right! Get excited! Burlycon, the only “community-oriented professional growth and educational convention for Burlesque performers, fans, and aficionados” is returning to Seattle’s Doubletree Inn this Thursday, November 7 to Sunday, November 10.

Burlycon is not your standard burlesque convention in that it has no public showcases or burlesque shows. Burlycon is produced by the burlesque community, for the burlesque community. It’s where you go to get your routines peer-reviewed by some of the top talents in the burlesque world, to learn some new moves that’ll spice up your act or tips on how to beef up your stage costumes. It’s also where you go to learn how to properly manage your finances as a burlesque performer, how to use online marketing to promote your shows and tips on how to get booked.

I’ll also be in the house, teaching a class on Saturday, November 9 at 5:15pm in Cascade 13 on how to most effectively ticket your burlesque event using Brown Paper Tickets or similar ticketing platforms. Also, Brown Paper Tickets will be hosting a delicious Mediterranean dinner courtesy of Mr. Gyros on Friday, November 8 from 6pm to 8pm in the Hospitality Suite, as well as handing out some neato gift bags. If you’re headed to Burlycon this year, I hope you’ll attend either of these events and come up and say hi. I love meeting burly friends from around the country and Burlycon often feels like one big family reunion!

There’s also tons to do besides learn. Thursday night will be the Birds of a Feather Caucuses in Cascade 10-13. This is your chance to mingle, network, and chat with others in your community whoburlycon2009_donspiro_02 share common backgrounds. Attendees are encouraged to attend the caucuses you identify with based on your region, your relationship status (single, married, parents or poly), your community (performers of size, LGBTQI, performers with disabilities or performers of color) or you hobbies. The caucuses will be followed by a meet and greet social in the Hospitality Suite so you can start connecting with new and old friends and get your weekend started out right!

Boozie Friday: Hangover Cures & Bitchin’ Brunches!

IMG_3661This week as all the kids went door to door in search of confections and mischief, many adults made use of the evening for for treats of a more intoxicating nature. Imbibing alcohol can make for a wonderful and fun evening in many cases. However, when overdone, it will definitely lead to very unpleasant side effects. There is a laundry list of physiological and psychological symptoms associated with the over consumption of alcohol but all you really need to know is it’s no fun.

Hangovers are like snowflakes in that everyone has a slightly different experience and preferences surrounding recovery. Although many people say they have a a “cure” it may not do diddly-squat for you, so you might as well start coming up with your own or slow down on the hooch. While the latter seems like the best option when hungover, many of us lose sight of the idea when a party is going on.

The “hair of the dog” as it’s called refers to drinking more in order to temporarily relieve the symptoms of your hangover. This is a particularly popular remedy since it seems to work, and a bloody Mary also happens to go great with steak and eggs. mimosas, bellinis, greyhounds, and micheladas all weigh in as popular hangover cocktails as they also go well with food and are relatively light in alcohol content which helps (you want to ease into your hangover buzz). For some “the hair of the dog” is a shot of whatever they were drinking (and usually a beer) after a light breakfast.

Some prefer coconut water, Gatorade, RC cola, various juices, or even plain old water but recent studies from the New York Post and others are saying that Sprite has a chemical content that’s the most effective. Another commonly used method particularly popular amongst restaurant workers is soda water and bitters. This beverage is sworn upon by many bartenders, servers and others in the industry as a go-to cure. What ever you choose to sip on just know that you are definitely dehydrated and may be fairly nauseous so you might want to stick with water and a low fiber BRAT diet until your symptoms have eased.

Any way you stack it, hangovers are no fun, but may be a necessary evil in the fight for your right to party. So drink reasonably and be safe when you are out raising cane on Saturday and it may make for a gentler Sunday morning. Remember to have a glass of water between drinks and start out the evening with a good meal. The war may rage on between the drinkers and their bodies but once in a while we may win a battle. Be safe!

The Tuesday Tease: Horrible and Hot – Halloween Burlesque Part 2!

Here it is, the final roundup of horrible and hot burlesque events happening on Halloween proper and on Friday, November 1st and Saturday, November 2nd, the period often referred to as the “Day of the Dead” in Mexican culture. The Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos in Spanish), focuses on gatherings of family and friends who pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, which honor the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. It’s nice to see this tradition honored in burlesque performances this year as I’ve always felt that the imagery associated with the holiday is so striking and dramatic.

I must say this has been the biggest burlesque Halloween that we’ve seen at Brown Paper Tickets and it’s just further proof that burlesque is growing, expanding and thriving all over the country. No need to honor the death of burlesque this Day of the Dead. This sparkly beast is showing no signs of passing away any time soon. Let’s raise a glass of tequila and suck on a sparkly sugar skull in honor of the hottest Halloween season yet!

Now get your costumes together, get your tickets and support your local spooky strippers!
